NaqshBanaras

The Space

A 600 sq. ft. saree showroom set within a heritage building in one of Varanasi's most historic and prominent locations, steps from the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Mandir. The existing property — two small, structurally delicate rooms — needed to be reimagined as a single, functional, and inviting retail space.

The Ask

The brief was to strengthen and renovate the heritage structure while creating a contemporary Banarasi saree showroom that held onto the warmth and cultural essence of a traditional saree gaddi — unmistakably rooted in Banaras, while offering the comfort, organisation, and visual polish of a modern retail experience.

The Result

Our Approach

Working within the constraints of an old heritage property, the renovation began below the surface — restoring and reinforcing the existing structure before a single design decision was made. Every intervention respected the building's character and limitations while quietly improving how it functioned.

The two compact rooms were unified into one seamless showroom. The real challenge was scale: housing an extensive collection of Banarasi sarees without the space feeling cramped, dim, or transactional.

Light-coloured wallpaper softened the interiors and gave the sarees' colours and craftsmanship a brighter stage to sit against. Ornately framed mirrors — deployed generously through the showroom — bounce light through the space and blur its edges, making the compact footprint read as far more expansive than it is.

Custom display units and storage were built around the traditional way of showcasing sarees, layering in better organisation and accessibility without losing that tactile, unhurried browsing experience. The ritual of sitting down, unfolding each piece, and discovering a weave up close — the heart of the gaddi experience — was preserved and simply given a more considered setting.

Rooted in Craft

Craft runs through the design language itself. Decorative detailing, traditional artwork, and handcrafted touches thread through the space, honouring both the cultural identity of Banaras and the heritage of the building it sits within. The interiors were deliberately restrained so the sarees could be the protagonists — against a calm, elegant backdrop, the vibrant colour and intricate weave of the Banarasi collection do the talking.

Naqsh Banaras is a careful transformation of an old heritage property into a contemporary retail space that never loses its roots — structural restoration balanced with contemporary design, and traditional retail culture balanced with modern comfort. More than a showroom, it's an experience of discovering Banarasi craftsmanship: intimate, personal, colourful, and unmistakably of the city it calls home.
